  1. Shawsheen Greenway River Herring Count

April 23, 2018, 7:00 AM - 7:00 PM @ Public pedestrian bridge between Atria Senior Living and Powermill Square.

What? Watch the river for just 10 minutes to count river herring swimming upstream to spawn. With 2 dams removed from the river early last year, native river herring are once again able to return from the Atlantic Ocean to spawn. As a result of the monitoring efforts of last year's 200+ volunteers, the Mass. Division of Marine Fisheries estimates that more than 1,500 river herring spawned in the newly opened section of the river. How? First, sign up for one or more time slots (http://www.signupgenius.com/go/4090448abae29abf58-shawsheen). There are 3 morning slots (7-11 am), 3 midday slots (11-3 pm), and 3 after school/work slots (3-7 pm) for every day of the spawning run. Show up any time during the period you sign up for and watch the river for just 10 minutes. The more counts we get, the better the estimate of the spawning run size will be.
