Andover Commutes
For years, the Town of Andover has endorsed our two local transportation management associations – the Merrimack Valley TMA (MVTMA) and the Junction TMO (JTMO). TMA/TMOs are nonprofit membership organizations that bring together local businesses, organizations, commercial and residential developers and municipalities to promote transportation demand management (TDM) initiatives that have a positive impact on local congestion and air quality. In fact, many of Andover’s leading employers are TMA/TMO members.
Through TMA/TMO membership, these companies are leading the way to help our community mitigate congestion, improve air quality for residents and employees, and improve access to employment and residential centers. In addition to developing and marketing commuter services for our members the MVTMA and JTMO have also been working with local, state, and federal officials to advocate for infrastructure improvements, as well as for transportation, environmental and zoning regulations that benefit Andover.
As local experts in travel options for residents and employees, MVTMA and JTMO staff have been helping their members for more than nine years and five years, respectively, to provide alternatives to drive-alone commuting by using the following strategies:
- Ride matching for carpool and vanpool formation
- On-site commuter promotions, incentive programs, and employee raffles
- Public transportation and demand/response shuttle options
- Bike-to-work events and cycling initiatives
- Preferred parking for carpoolers
- Technical assistance in developing telework programs and pre-tax commuter benefits programs that save money on payroll taxes for both companies and employees, and
- Assistance from TMA staff who work closely with public officials to help companies, employees, and residents take advantage of the benefits associated with both the state’s new 40R Smart Growth legislation and Transit Oriented Development (TOD).
