Disposing of Household Hazardous Waste In Andover

Currently, twice per year, as announced in the local papers, the Town provides for the dropping off of household hazardous wastesThe next HHW day is scheduled for the Saturday, May 10, 2008, at West Elementary School from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm.  Please mark it on your calendar!  There will be no HHW collection during September 2007!!

Household Hazardous Waste accepted at the Town drop-off includes:

  • anything with mercury
      (thermometers, thermostats, fluorescent lights,
      switches in pumps, pre-1996 alkaline batteries,
      gun cleaning products, chemistry kits, etc.)
  • anything "flammable" or "combustible" or "corrosive"
      (solvents, gasoline, diesel, paint thinner, drain opener, acids, etc.)
  • all poisons and pesticides
      (all leftover insecticides, herbicides, pool chemicals, etc.)

    Also,

  • pressurized cans
  • fertilizers
  • household cleaning products
  • stains, varnishes and all paints
  • waste oil
  • antifreeze

    However,
    No explosives, biological or radioactive wastes, appliances, AC units, tires, latex paints, 
    propane tanks or alkaline batteries 

    are allowed.  Alkaline batteries and latex paints, when dry, may be placed in regular trash

Other Household Hazardous Waste:

  • button batteries -
      Button batteries are the small batteries used in watches,
      hearing aids, calculators, cameras and pacemakers.

      Many used button batteries are recyclable
      and contain metals that are bad for the environment.
      Join our recycling effort for used button batteries.

Don't trash used button batteries,
bring them to one of our collection sites listed below.
Please place your used button batteries in the proper container.

Paint sludge - 55 Gallons

Paint & Flammable Liquids - 220 Gallons

Aerosols - 220 Gallons

Resins & Adhesives - 1 Cubic Yard

Antifreeze, Waxes, & other Organic Liquids - 55 Gallons

Waste Oil - 220 Gallons

Asbestos - 55 Gallons

Lab Pack Chemicals - 335 Gallons

Mercury Lab Pack - 5 Gallons

Pesticides - 495 Gallons

Flammable Solids Lab Pack - 10 Gallons

Water Reactive Chemicals - 5 Gallons

Fluorescent Tubes - 240 Linear Feet

Lead Acid Batteries - 1 Pallet

Nickel-Cadmium Batteries - 5 Gallons

In addition to the above we also "inherited" 4 vials of radioactive lab chemicals (Uranium and Thorium compounds) that the company couldn't take away so we are temporarily storing them while we locate a final resting place.
