Middle School Chromebooks

On June 28th, based on feedback provided by families in a recently conducted survey, the Andover School Committee voted to make two important changes regarding technology in Andover’s three middle schools:

  • Now you can rent a device directly from Andover Schools - For the 2020-21 school year Andover will experiment with a pilot program where we will allow families to utilize a school compliant Chromebook that can be used at school and at home for an annual fee of $130. This fee provides access to the device, repairs and service from Andover IT and protection against accidental damage. Participation in this program is completely voluntary and students may continue to bring a personal device, provided it is placed under school management.
  • Create a safer environment for your student through management - Beginning in the upcoming 2020-21 school year all student Chromebook devices, including personal BYOD devices, will need to be “managed” by the Andover IT department.  These devices will be managed only during the school day and will be unlocked after school, during vacation and over the summer. This is to ensure a safer and more predictable experience for all students and staff. Rising 8th graders with non-Chromebook devices are not affected by this change.

Renting a Chromebook

While families are welcome to provide their own devices the new rental pilot allows a simple "no hassle" experience.  Andover procures, maintains, repairs and insures the device for an annual fee of $130 per student per year.  You will receive an HP Chromebook which is a hybrid laptop/tablet with a touch screen, long battery life and fully enabled for video conferencing.  The device is ruggedized to meet the demands of our emerging learners.  For more details review this list of specifications.  For families with economic challenges, scholarship devices will be available - details will be forthcoming shortly.  For more detailed information you can see the slides from our parent information session which has a more detailed FAQ.or watch a video recording of our information session.

How Do I Order?

Ordering is done through the school EFundsForSchool portal which is used for busing fees, athletic fees and so forth.  Click here to start your transaction.  If you already have an account then you can simply login.  If you have never used this system you will need to create a new account.  To do so you will need to have the student ids (also called LASID numbers) of each of your students.  Your Student’s Local ID# can be found at the top of their Report Card, Schedule, and also by going to the ’My Info’ tab, then ’My Details’ in Aspen. Once you have logged in you should select "Pay for Optional Fees".  If you follow the prompts you will see an option for "Chromebook Rental Option".  Put that in your cart and follow payment instructions.

Devices will be ordered over the summer and we plan to provide devices during the start of school.  You will have until Friday June 26th to place your order for the 2020-21 school year.

Managing Your Chromebook

To increase your student’s safety and ensure a more productive school experience all middle school student Chromebooks will be managed during the school day.  During the "managed hours" your student will be forced to login to their Andover provided GSuite account and we will control your students experience and limit access to applications and extensions.  While at home and during vacations and holidays families, if they choose, may create additional "unmanaged" accounts on their device with no restrictions.  Families should be aware that while students are logged in at school Andover IT prevents students from viewing inappropriate content.  However, while logged in using your home network the responsibility remains with families to control internet usage and access.

Families can place their student devices under management themselves by following these instructions.  You can do this now or at the start of school.  If you are uncomfortable with these sorts of things, IT will provide assistance during the first few weeks of school. All devices must be under management by October 1, 2020.
