MISTRAL presents: “Dvorák and the Heartbeat of America”

Sunday, November 22, 2020

When Antonin Dvorak came to America to teach at New York’s National Conservatory of Music from 1892-95, he discovered America’s voice in the Negro spirituals brought to him by Harry T. Burleigh, his African-American composition pupil. Our program celebrates this creative cultural exchange and its profound influence on Dvorák and on the path of American music. The program includes works by Dvorák, Will T. Burleigh, and William Grant Still, known as the “Dean of African American composers.” We are pleased to welcome the dynamic, international baritone, Justin Austin, to the Mistral stage for the first time, alongside beloved Mistral members Julianne Lee (on both viola and violin), Stephanie Fong (viola), and Sarita Kwok (violin), as well as pianist Sophie Scolnik-Brower, cellist/conductor Sasha Scolnik-Brower,and flutist Julie Scolnik.. The Mistral 2020-21 concert season is funded in part by the Massachusetts Cultural Council.
