The Town of Andover has been notified by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) that beginning on Monday, August 6th, night work will begin on the project to replace the bridge on Route 28 (North Main Street) in Andover that carries traffic over the MBTA Railroad. The hours each weeknight will be 9 p.m., through 5 a.m., for the next six weeks, and will enable crews to carry out construction operations.
Additionally, on Thursday, August 9th, the current traffic pattern will be shifted from Phase 1 to Phase 2. During this interim traffic condition, the dedicated left turn lane from Route 28 north onto Railroad Avenue will be temporarily removed. This traffic shift will enable crews to carry out work including paving and roadway realignment, and this phase of work that is requiring the traffic shift is expected to be completed by the beginning of September 2018.
As with every project, work is being carried out in ways that limit impacts on the local community and traveling public. This work is one component of an $8.5 million bridge replacement project that is scheduled to be completed in 2019.Signs and traffic control devices will be used to guide drivers through this area. MassDOT encourages drivers to reduce speed and allow for extra time through this area. All work is weather dependent and is subject to change without notice.
Also, on Thursday, August 2nd at 7:00 PM at the Andover Public Safety Building, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation will join area officials for a public information meeting regarding the progress of the North Main Street (Route 28) Bridge Replacement project. The purpose of this meeting is to provide an update on completed work and discuss transitioning to Phase 2 of the project, including the temporary realignment of Sweeney Court
