Information on Discolored Water in Andover
As we enter summer and water demand in Andover increases, residents may experience discolored water.
When water use increases throughout town, the system is pumping more water, at a higher rate of speed. When this occurs, sediments that are normally settled during regular demand periods can cause discoloration of the water. When water use slows down, the sediment settles, only re-appearing during the next peak demand. The discoloration is an aesthetic issue, and there are no health risks associated with discolored water.
If you experience discolored water:
- Periodically run cold water to help flush the system; running an outside spigot, basement sink, or bath tub can help clear the water lines surrounding your home
- Take note of the time and date that the discoloration was noticed
- If you have experienced discoloration while washing clothing, the Water Department supplies a product that will help remove any discoloration. This product can be picked up at 5 Campanelli Drive from 8:00am – 4:00pm, Monday – Friday. Please call ahead at (978) 623-8860.
- If discoloration is still evident, report discoloration to the Department of Public Works Water Division at (978) 623-8860
- Residents can also report discolored water at www.andoverma.gov/311
All reports of discolored water are logged and tracked by the Water Division in order to best understand where instances of discolored water are appearing and take necessary actions to address these issues.
The town has accelerated its water main replacement schedule, quadrupling investments in water main replacements over the last five years. Additionally, the town deploys a comprehensive unidirectional water flushing program for the purpose of mitigating discolored water.
