  5. Freedom of Expression on Academic Campuses

    October 25, 2018, 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM @ Cochran Chapel, Phillips Academy

Do educators have a responsibility to create and sustain a campus environment of open discourse and rigorous examination of a range of viewpoints? How can schools prepare students to engage as active, curious, respectful citizens? In an era when speakers are being heckled or disinvited by campus groups whose perspectives differ, how can schools emphasize a culture of open-minded listening and vigorous debate? Under President Zimmer, an advocate of free expression as an essential element of American education, the University of Chicago has articulated a commitment to “free, robust, and uninhibited debate and deliberation among all members of the University’s community.” John Palfrey will interview President Zimmer about The Chicago Principles, the importance of academic freedom to our society, the relationship between free expression and privilege, and the future of free speech on American campuses before opening the floor to questions and comments from the audience.
