  1. Shawsheen Greenway River Herring Count

May 11, 2018, 7:00 AM - 7:00 PM @ Public pedestrian bridge between Atria Senior Living and Powermill Square.

What? Watch the river for just 10 minutes to count river herring swimming upstream to spawn. With 2 dams removed from the river early last year, native river herring are once again able to return from the Atlantic Ocean to spawn. As a result of the monitoring efforts of last year's 200+ volunteers, the Mass. Division of Marine Fisheries estimates that more than 1,500 river herring spawned in the newly opened section of the river. How? First, sign up for one or more time slots ( There are 3 morning slots (7-11 am), 3 midday slots (11-3 pm), and 3 after school/work slots (3-7 pm) for every day of the spawning run. Show up any time during the period you sign up for and watch the river for just 10 minutes. The more counts we get, the better the estimate of the spawning run size will be.

  2. Strike Up the Bands at Phillips Academy

    May 11, 2018, 7:30 PM - 8:30 PM @ Cochran Chapel, Phillips Academy

On Friday, May 11, 2018 at 7:30 p.m., the Phillips Academy Department of Music will present a concert featuring the Academy Concert Bands under the direction of Vincent Monaco and Peter Cirelli. The program will feature the music from the motion picture "How to Train Your Dragon" by John Powell as well as "The Walking Frog" by K.L. King, a "Two-Step" originally written as circus music for clown "walkabouts." King's classic has a flavor, with catchy rhythms and attractive melodies, which evokes the wonderful heritage of circus music from the era of the great circus bands. Bernstein's "Overture to Candide," arranged for wind ensemble, will be directed by Mr. Monaco. Rounding out the program are a waltz by Shostakovich along with madrigal arrangements by Vinson as well as his march "The Brandenburg Gate." The concert is free of charge and open to the public. Cochran Chapel is handicapped accessible.
