  1. Shawsheen Greenway River Herring Count

May 18, 2018, 7:00 AM - 7:00 PM @ Public pedestrian bridge between Atria Senior Living and Powermill Square.

What? Watch the river for just 10 minutes to count river herring swimming upstream to spawn. With 2 dams removed from the river early last year, native river herring are once again able to return from the Atlantic Ocean to spawn. As a result of the monitoring efforts of last year's 200+ volunteers, the Mass. Division of Marine Fisheries estimates that more than 1,500 river herring spawned in the newly opened section of the river. How? First, sign up for one or more time slots ( There are 3 morning slots (7-11 am), 3 midday slots (11-3 pm), and 3 after school/work slots (3-7 pm) for every day of the spawning run. Show up any time during the period you sign up for and watch the river for just 10 minutes. The more counts we get, the better the estimate of the spawning run size will be.

  3. Phillips Academy Jazz Band Concert with Thomas Chapin Guest Artist: Native Soul

    May 18, 2018, 7:30 PM - 9:00 PM @ Cochran Chapel, Phillips Academy

On Friday, May 18 at 7:30 p.m., in the Cochran Chapel on the Phillips Academy campus, the Department of Music will present the Academy Jazz Band in concert with Thomas Chapin Guest Artist: Native Soul. Native Soul is a band that brings together the distinct talents of four very gifted artists. Their main forte, however, is their musicianship. Their sound is so well blended that the four players display the lushness of tone and sound produced by the Big Bands. The members of Native Soul, however, go beyond big sound and individuality and turn into a quartet that understands and respects each other's talents making it almost impossible to single out a lead person. says, "Native Soul are four team players, four amazing artists that play well together gelling in sync, all of One Mind here laying down a performance that deserves attention, and like their previous outing, impressive to the core." Works by Ortiz, Shemaria, Williams, Hefti, and Prima will be performed.
